When it comes to social networking, you may be using Facebook to create deeper business relationships; Twitter for quick communication and news sharing; and LinkdIn for your overall professional networking. But might there be another level of social media linkage that can be well worthy of your time?

To that end, here’s a short list of solid social networking sites that are off the well-worn path, and each was created specifically for entrepreneurs. You may already be familiar with some of these, while others may represent exciting new sources for cultivating more customers, client leads or profitable partnerships:

Market your business for Google visibility, share your knowledge to stimulate opportunities, and build your business through unlimited ads in the Marketplace.
  • Go BIG Network: If you own a business or want to start a new business and need funding, a business plan or a mentor, you’ll get help here. Billed as the “Biggest Community of Startup Companies,” this social networking site is also a great place for web developers to secure projects, as so many entrepreneur members on the site seek web design help.
  • DreamStake: This Ning.com based social networking site is a vibrant community for creative professionals and entrepreneurs. Get help building your business, finding funding, legal advice, software development skill, and marketing expertise. Also connect with joint venture partners with whom to pursue important client opportunities.
  • Xing: It’s your interactive online business card, where you’re among 8 million members with a personal home page, exchanging messages, and receiving special offers on travel, electronics and more. Manage your business contacts along with seven million other members to this site. You can even select to have your Xing profile discoverable on search engines such as Google, a big plus.

As a small business owner or entrepreneur, you can strengthen your online marketing efforts by setting up shop on social media sites beyond the usual suspects: LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. The list above offers but a few good sites you should explore. It’s possible you’ll find value beyond what you get with the leading sites. On these, you’ll have an opportunity to be a bigger fish in a smaller social media pond.
